Muddy Water

This image taken earlier in 2013 from the NASA AQUA satellite shows the Mississippi River delta and Gulf of Mexico. The brown color in the water around the Mississippi is a result of sediment washing down the river from April floods in the Midwestern US. April 2013 was a wet month across much of the farmland of the Midwest, especially across Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa which saw precipitation amounts more than 4 inches above normal. Sediment from the floods is captured here dumping into the Gulf of Mexico. Some estimates show the Mississippi River carries about 550 million metric tons of sediment into the Gulf each year. Even with the influx of sediment from floods, land is still being eroded at a fast pace along the Mississippi delta (see previous Earth Story post on disappearing Louisiana: http://tinyurl.com/bpnknpx )

The Soviet military worked hard at cartography and were extremely prolific and extremely detailed. This here is a map of Bombay and its surrounding areas.
